In the summer of 2014 Jay Senetchko collaborated with the online education company Craftsy to produce an introductory guide to paint mixing and colour theory, Paint & Palette Essentials: A Beginner’s Guide to Oil Painting. It offers some fundamental and extremely useful information that the artist has accrued over the last decade and more of his teaching and artistic career.
This course explores, the properties of mineral and modern paints, different mediums, surfaces and techniques, but focuses on color theory and how to take a limited array of pigments and expand them into a palette that is both approachable and versatile. It begins by controlling two different monochromatic techniques, expands that simple palette into a Classical palette, before fully evolving into an Impressionist palette.
Alla Prima and glazing techniques are also covered in their relation to colour theory and the creation of colour harmony within a picture. The course offers clear technical instruction through the creation of a still life composition with each lesson. Follow the link below for more information.
In the summer of 2015 Jay Senetchko then collaborated again with Craftsy to create a composition instructional video, Colours in Bloom: Painting Flowers with Oil. While again offering technical instruction in the application of paint, this course focuses on composition and its perceptual impact on an audience.
Among the topics covered in this course are, the importance of placement, the development of visual paths, and the use of both value and colour contrast in the creation of focal points. For anyone interested in how pictures affect a viewer, this course introduces some very useful and easy to follow techniques. Follow the link below for more information.
