Bloodlines provokes members of Phantoms in the Front Yard to explore their cultural background. We posed this question to ourselves: what connection, if any, do we have with our cultural pasts?
All of our members come from different lineages, although some are shared. Through our discussions we have come to recognize that it is not our place to recount directly the history of our immigrant grandparents or the nation-states of their birthplace, but to see how that cultural background surfaces in each of our lives presently. Common questions emerged about collisions of past and present culture: How does being of Ukrainian, Jewish, or German ancestry affect our view on being Canadian? Does it at all?
Does the concept nation-hood even feature as an aspect of our personalities? These questions reflect not only our experience, but that of most people in this multi-cultural country.
